Start with one clear question pattern

The most useful direction question is 请问,…在哪里? You can use it for bathrooms, subway stations, hotel lobbies, ticket counters, restaurants, and exits: 请问,地铁站在哪里? or 请问,洗手间在哪里?

For travel situations, keep the place name short and clear. If you are showing a map, you can point and ask 请问,怎么去这里? This means how do I get here?

Listen for direction words and time words

Common replies include 往前走, 左转, 右转, 在对面, 在旁边, and 过马路. Learners should practice recognizing these words before trying to understand every sentence.

Time words also matter. If someone says 走路五分钟, 坐地铁两站, or 很近, you know whether walking is realistic or whether you should switch to a taxi or subway.

Use repair phrases when the answer is too fast

Direction answers can be quick because locals assume the route is obvious. Keep repair phrases ready: 不好意思,请再说一遍, 请说慢一点, and 可以写一下吗.

A good practice loop is simple: ask where a place is, hear one route, confirm the first step, and thank the person. This builds real travel confidence more effectively than memorizing a long dialogue.
