What are fixed adverb patterns?
Chinese often links two clauses or two adjectives with a fixed pair of markers to show a close relationship. Two of the most common and useful are 一…就… ("as soon as…") and 越…越… ("the more… the more…"). Both are high-frequency patterns in HSK 3–4.
一…就… links two events in tight sequence — the moment one thing happens, another follows. 越…越… links two changing quantities — as one increases, the other increases too.
一…就… — "as soon as…"
The pattern 一…就… (yī…jiù…) means "as soon as… then…" or "the moment… then…". The first verb or event follows 一, and the immediate result follows 就.
一到家就下雨了 — "as soon as I got home it started raining." 一学就会 — "learn it once and you get it right away." 一听到这个消息就哭了 — "the moment he heard the news he burst into tears."
It also describes a habitual response: 我一到北京就给你打电话 — "I will call you as soon as I arrive in Beijing." 她一紧张就说不出话 — "she cannot speak the moment she gets nervous."
Structure: 一 + verb/verb phrase + 就 + result. The 一 marks the trigger; the 就 marks the immediate, almost automatic consequence.
越…越… — "the more… the more…"
The pattern 越…越… (yuè…yuè…) links two changing things: as the first increases, the second increases too. 越学越难 — "the more you study, the harder it gets." 越快越好 — "the faster, the better."
Structure: 越 + adjective/verb + 越 + adjective/verb. Both slots describe a change or a gradable quality: 越多越好 (the more the better), 越说越兴奋 (the more he talked, the more excited he got).
越 A 越 B can repeat a different subject in each slot when needed: 你越帮我,我越紧张 — "the more you help me, the more nervous I get."
越来越 — "more and more" (one-directional)
越来越 (yuè lái yuè) expresses a single change that keeps growing in one direction over time. 越来越冷 — "colder and colder." 越来越难 — "harder and harder." 我越来越喜欢中国 — "I like China more and more."
越来越 is a single, self-contained phrase: it does not take a second 越 and does not need a second adjective. It always describes one thing changing over time, not a correlation between two things.
越来越 vs 越 A 越 B
越来越 is one-directional and time-based: 天气越来越热 — "the weather is getting hotter and hotter" (one thing, over time).
越 A 越 B is a correlation between two variables: 越热越想喝冷饮 — "the hotter it is, the more I want a cold drink" (two linked things).
Quick test: if you can replace the sentence with "more and more (of one thing)", use 越来越. If you need "the more X, the more Y", use 越…越….
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not use 一…就… for a single event. It needs two events in sequence: 我一到家就下雨了 is two events; you cannot say 我一到家就 without a second result.
Do not write 越越来越. 越来越 is already complete and never takes a second 越: say 越来越难, not 越越来越难.
Make sure both parts of 越…越… describe a change or gradable quality. 越他越高兴 does not work because 他 is not gradable.
Do not confuse 越来越 (one thing changing over time) with 越 A 越 B (two linked variables).
Do not place 就 in the wrong position in 一…就…: 就 always introduces the result, right after the first clause.

FAQ
Common questions
What does 一…就… mean?
It means "as soon as…" or "the moment… then…". The first event follows 一, and the immediate result follows 就: 一到家就下雨了 ("as soon as I got home it rained").
What is the difference between 越来越 and 越 A 越 B?
越来越 describes one thing changing over time (越来越冷 = colder and colder). 越 A 越 B links two changing variables (越热越想喝冷饮 = the hotter it is, the more I want a cold drink).
Can I say 越越来越?
No. 越来越 is already complete and never takes a second 越. Say 越来越难 (harder and harder), not 越越来越难.
How is 一…就… different from 就 alone?
就 alone simply marks an early or quick result. 一…就… links two events so tightly that the second follows almost automatically from the first.
