What the 把 construction is

The 把 (bǎ) construction is one of the most distinctive features of Chinese grammar. It lets you state what was done to an object — the "disposal" of something — in a natural, native way. The core pattern is: subject + 把 + object + verb + complement.

我把门打开了 (wǒ bǎ mén dǎ kāi le) — I opened the door. The key difference from a normal sentence is that 把 moves the object in front of the verb, letting the verb carry a result, direction, or destination. 把字句 has no direct English equivalent, which is why it confuses learners.

The construction always implies the object is being handled, changed, or moved in some way. It is extremely common in everyday speech, so mastering it makes your Chinese sound far more natural.

The basic structure and usage conditions

The pattern is 主语 + 把 + 宾语 + 动词 + 其他成分: 我把门打开了 (I opened the door). 她把房间打扫干净了 (tā bǎ fáng jiān dǎ sǎo gān jìng le) — she cleaned the room. 请把作业写完 (qǐng bǎ zuò yè xiě wán) — please finish the homework.

Three conditions must be met. First, the object must be definite and known (有定/已知) — a specific door, that homework, this room — not some indefinite thing. You can say 把这本书给他, but not 把一本书给他 (a book is indefinite).

Second, the verb needs a result, direction, or destination complement (结果/方向/趋向补语). 把门打开, not 把门开. The sentence must express what happened as a result.

Third, use 把 to stress how the subject acted on and disposed of the object — the emphasis is on the outcome for the object, not just the action itself.

把 vs normal SVO word order

Both orders are grammatical, but they emphasize different things. SVO: 我打开了门 (wǒ dǎ kāi le mén) — I opened the door, a neutral statement of fact. 把字句: 我把门打开了 — I opened the door, stressing what I did to the door and the resulting state.

Use 把 when the object is already known and you are describing what happened to it: 你把这个字写错了 (nǐ bǎ zhè ge zì xiě cuò le) — you wrote this character wrong. Use SVO when introducing something new: 我买了一本书 (I bought a book).

A good rule of thumb: if the object is a specific, known thing and the sentence ends with a result, direction, or location, 把 is usually the more natural choice.

把 with result complements

把 pairs naturally with result complements (结果补语) because both express a completed outcome. 把作业做完 (bǎ zuò yè zuò wán) — finish the homework. 把房间打扫干净 (bǎ fáng jiān dǎ sǎo gān jìng) — clean the room spotless.

More examples: 把衣服洗干净 (bǎ yī fu xǐ gān jìng) — wash the clothes clean. 把杯子打破了 (bǎ bēi zi dǎ pò le) — broke the cup. 把饭吃完了 (bǎ fàn chī wán le) — finished the meal.

The result complement (完, 干净, 破, 好, 到) is what makes the 把 sentence complete and natural. Without it, the verb alone feels unfinished.

把 with directional complements

把 also combines with directional complements (趋向补语) to show movement. 把书拿出来 (bǎ shū ná chū lái) — take out the book. 把门关上 (bǎ mén guān shàng) — close the door. 把窗帘拉开 (bǎ chuāng lián lā kāi) — draw the curtains open.

More examples: 把灯打开 (bǎ dēng dǎ kāi) — turn on the light. 把车开过来 (bǎ chē kāi guò lái) — drive the car over. 把衣服挂上去 (bǎ yī fu guà shàng qù) — hang the clothes up.

Simple direction words like 来/去/上/下/进/出 attach to the verb to show where the object moves. This is one of the most frequent uses of 把 in daily life.

把 with 在, 到, and 给

把 also expresses where an object ends up or to whom it goes, using 在 (location), 到 (destination), and 给 (recipient). 把书放在桌上 (bǎ shū fàng zài zhuō shàng) — put the book on the table.

把花送给妈妈 (bǎ huā sòng gěi mā ma) — give the flowers to mom. 把钱交给老师 (bǎ qián jiāo gěi lǎo shī) — hand the money to the teacher. 把车开到门口 (bǎ chē kāi dào mén kǒu) — drive the car to the entrance.

These endings complete the disposal: the object is moved to a place (在/到) or transferred to a person (给). The pattern is subject + 把 + object + verb + 在/到/给 + destination/person.

Negation and modal verbs with 把

To negate a 把 sentence, put 不 (bù) or 没 (méi) before 把. 别把门关上 (bié bǎ mén guān shàng) — do not close the door. 我没把作业做完 (wǒ méi bǎ zuò yè zuò wán) — I did not finish the homework.

不把 is for habits, refusals, or future intent: 他从来不把垃圾扔地上 (tā cóng lái bù bǎ lā jī rēng dì shàng) — he never throws trash on the ground. 没把 is for past events: 我昨天没把伞带来 (wǒ zuó tiān méi bǎ sǎn dài lái) — I did not bring the umbrella yesterday.

Modal verbs also come before 把: 你要把作业写完 (nǐ yào bǎ zuò yè xiě wán) — you must finish the homework. 我能把这件事办好 (wǒ néng bǎ zhè jiàn shì bàn hǎo) — I can handle this matter well. 别把... is the common way to say "do not (do something to it)".

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not use 把 with intransitive verbs or verbs that cannot affect an object. 他把病了 is wrong — say 他病了 (he got sick). Verbs like 来, 去, 回, 到, 知道, 喜欢, 有 cannot take 把.

The object must be definite and specific. 把一本书给他 is wrong — say 把这本书给他 (this book). The object in a 把 sentence is always something already known or identified.

Do not confuse 把 with 被. 把 focuses on the doer acting on the object (他把门打开了 — he opened the door); 被 focuses on the object being acted on (门被他打开了 — the door was opened by him). The same event can switch between them.

Do not end the 把 sentence with a bare verb. 把门开 is incomplete — add a result or direction: 把门打开 (open the door), 把门关上 (close the door).

FAQ

Common questions

What is the 把 construction used for?

The 把 (bǎ) construction expresses what a subject did to a known, specific object and what resulted: 我把门打开了 (I opened the door). It moves the object before the verb so the verb can carry a result, direction, or destination.

When must I use 把 instead of normal word order?

Use 把 when the object is definite and the sentence stresses the outcome for that object, often ending in a result, direction, or location: 把作业做完 (finish the homework). Use normal SVO for neutral statements or when introducing new things: 我买了一本书 (I bought a book).

Can I negate a 把 sentence?

Yes — put 不, 没, or 别 before 把: 别把门关上 (do not close the door), 我没把作业做完 (I did not finish the homework), 他从来不把垃圾扔地上 (he never throws trash on the ground).

What is the difference between 把 and 被?

把 emphasizes the doer acting on the object (他把门打开了 — he opened the door), while 被 emphasizes the object being acted on (门被他打开了 — the door was opened by him). They are two sides of the same event and can often be converted.
