What are duration and frequency complements (时量/动量补语)?

A duration complement (时量补语 shí liàng bǔ yǔ) states how long an action lasts: 我学了三年 (I studied for three years), 他等了十分钟 (he waited ten minutes). It answers the question "for how long?"

A frequency complement (动量补语 dòng liàng bǔ yǔ) states how many times an action happens: 我去过三次 (I have been three times), 我看了两遍 (I read or watched it twice). It answers the question "how many times?"

Both are built the same way: a number plus a measure word placed directly after the verb. They are among the most useful patterns for talking about experience, routines, and past events, and they appear constantly from HSK 2 onward.

Duration complements (时量补语): verb + length of time

The pattern is verb + number + time unit: 学了三年 (studied three years), 等了十分钟 (waited ten minutes), 住了半年 (lived half a year), 工作了一整天 (worked a whole day), 休息了两个小时 (rested two hours).

Common time units are 分钟 (minute), 小时 (hour), 天 (day), 周 or 星期 (week), 月 (month), and 年 (year). The duration tells how long the action continued, not when it happened.

Frequency complements (动量补语): verb + number + measure word

The pattern is verb + number + measure word: 去过三次 (been three times), 看过两遍 (read or watched twice), 来过一趟 (came once), 说过一回 (said once).

Choose the measure word carefully. 次 is the neutral, most common "time". 遍 stresses completing a whole course or process from start to finish. 回 is a colloquial "time" like 次. 趟 is a round trip, for going somewhere and coming back.

Duration vs frequency: 学了三年 vs 学过三次

The same verb can take either a duration or a frequency complement, and the meaning changes completely. 学了三年 means "studied for three years" (how long), while 学过三次 means "studied three times" (how many times).

A good habit is to ask which question the complement answers. If the answer is a length of time (三年, 十分钟, 半年), it is a duration complement. If the answer is a count (三次, 两遍, 一趟), it is a frequency complement.

Where 了 goes

For a completed action, place 了 right after the verb and before the duration: 我学了三小时 (I studied for three hours), 他等了十分钟 (he waited ten minutes).

To stress that the action is still continuing, add a second 了 at the very end: 我学了三年汉语了 (I have been studying Chinese for three years, and still am). The sentence-final 了 marks an ongoing situation.

With frequency, 过 marks experience: 我去过三次 (I have been three times), 我吃过两次 (I have eaten it twice). Use 过 to report life experience, not 了.

Position of the object

An ordinary noun object can follow the duration: 我学了两个小时汉语 (I studied Chinese for two hours), 我看了一个小时电视 (I watched TV for an hour).

To emphasize the object, repeat the verb: 我学汉语学了两个小时 (I studied Chinese for two hours). This "verb + object + verb + duration" form is common when the object carries focus.

A pronoun object usually sits before the duration: 我等了他一个小时 (I waited for him for an hour), 我找了他半天 (I looked for him for a long time). Do not say 我等了一个小时他 — the pronoun is too short to carry after a long complement.

With frequency and a noun object: 我去过一次中国 (I have been to China once). With a pronoun: 我找过他两次 (I have looked for him twice).

Asking how long and how many times

For duration, use 多长时间 or 多久: 你学了多长时间? (how long have you studied?), 你等了多久? (how long did you wait?).

For frequency, use 几次 or 几遍: 你去过几次? (how many times have you been?), 你看了几遍? (how many times did you watch or read it?).

These question words sit in the same slot as the number: 你学了多久? answers 我学了三年; 你去过几次? answers 我去过三次.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not move 了 to the very end when the action is complete. 我学三小时了 means "I have been studying for three hours (and still am)", while 我学了三小时 means "I studied for three hours (and finished)".

Choose the right measure word. 遍 means a complete run-through — 看了两遍 means watched or read the whole thing twice — while 次 is neutral — 去了三次 means went three times. 趟 is a round trip (来了一趟), and 回 is a colloquial substitute for 次 (说过一回).

Do not split a pronoun object: 等了他一个小时 is correct, 等了一个小时他 is wrong.

Do not confuse the two questions: 多长时间 (duration) asks about length, while 多少次 or 几次 (frequency) asks about count. 学了三年 and 学过三次 are very different statements.

FAQ

Common questions

What is a duration complement (时量补语)?

It states how long an action lasts, using a number plus a time unit placed after the verb: 学了三年 (studied three years), 等了十分钟 (waited ten minutes), 住了半年 (lived half a year).

Where does 了 go in a duration complement?

After the verb and before the duration: 我学了三小时. To show the action is still continuing, add a second 了 at the end: 我学了三年汉语了.

What is the difference between 次 and 遍?

次 is a neutral "time"; 遍 stresses completing a whole course or process from start to finish. 看了两遍 means watched or read the whole thing twice, while 看了两次 just means did it twice.

How do I ask about duration and frequency?

Use 多长时间 or 多久 for duration (你学了多长时间?) and 几次 or 几遍 for frequency (你去过几次?).
