What are frequency adverbs (频率副词)?
Frequency adverbs (频率副词 pínlǜ fùcí) describe how often an action or state occurs. The core set is: 经常/常常 (often), 总是 (always), 从来不 (never), and 有时/有时候 (sometimes).
They sit directly BEFORE the verb or adjective and answer the question "how often?". Chinese does not inflect verbs for tense, so frequency is expressed entirely through these small adverbs.
They are everywhere in HSK 1–2 speech: 我经常去健身房 (I often go to the gym), 他总是很忙 (he is always busy), 我从来不抽烟 (I never smoke).
经常 / 常常 — "often, frequently" (经常/常常)
经常 (jīngcháng) and 常常 (chángcháng) both mean "often, frequently": 我经常去健身房 (I often go to the gym), 他常常迟到 (he is often late), 我们经常一起吃饭 (we often eat together).
经常 is slightly more formal and common in writing, while 常常 is more colloquial. Both describe habitual or repeated actions, so they need a repeated context, not a single event — 我昨天经常... is wrong.
经常 can also act as an adjective meaning "regular/frequent": 经常的事 (a regular occurrence). 常常 does not take this adjective use — it is only an adverb.
总是 — "always" (总是)
总是 (zǒngshì) means "always": 他总是很忙 (he is always busy), 她总是第一个到 (she is always the first to arrive).
总是 emphasizes an unchanging habit or constant state, and it often carries a mild complaint or exaggeration: 他总是迟到 (he is always late).
The colloquial short form is 老 (lǎo): 他老迟到 (he is always late) — informal and slightly critical. Compare strength: 总是 = 100% of the time, while 经常 = often but not always.
从来不 / 从来没 — "never" (从来不/从来没)
从来不 (cónglái bù) means "never" for habitual or ongoing actions: 我从来不抽烟 (I never smoke), 她从来不喝酒 (she never drinks).
从来没 (cónglái méi) means "never (up to now)" for past experience: 我从来没去过中国 (I have never been to China).
The pattern is 从来 + 不/没 + verb, and it expresses a total absence, stronger than 不 or 没 alone: 从来不迟到 (never late), 从来没去过 (never been). Match 不 with habits and 没 with past experience.
有时 / 有时候 — "sometimes" (有时/有时候)
有时 (yǒushí) and 有时候 (yǒu shíhou) both mean "sometimes": 我有时候不吃早饭 (I sometimes skip breakfast), 有时他会来 (sometimes he comes).
有时候 is slightly more colloquial and more common in speech, while 有时 is a touch more written. In most sentences they are interchangeable.
They can pair with 也 or 会 for variety: 有时候我也去跑步 (sometimes I also go running), 有时候我会早睡 (sometimes I go to bed early).
Position — before the verb, and comparison with time adverbs
Frequency adverbs go BEFORE the verb or adjective: 我经常跑步, 他总是很忙, 从来不迟到, 有时候不吃早饭.
They differ from time adverbs (时间副词) like 正在/已经/马上, which describe WHEN an action happens; frequency adverbs describe HOW OFTEN. 我已经吃完了 (I have already finished — time) vs 我经常吃完 (I often finish — frequency).
Because they express habit, frequency adverbs cannot describe a single past event: 昨天我经常去... is wrong. Use a specific time word, or drop the frequency adverb.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not place the frequency adverb after the verb: 我去经常健身房 is wrong — it must be 我经常去健身房.
Do not use frequency adverbs for one-off events: 昨天我经常看电视 is wrong — say 昨天我看电视, or use 我经常看电视 for the habit.
Distinguish 从来 + 不 (habitual "never") from 从来 + 没 (past "never have"): 我从来不抽烟 (habit) vs 我从来没去过 (experience).
Do not confuse 总是 (always, 100%) with 经常 (often): 他经常迟到 (often) is not the same as 他总是迟到 (always).
Remember that 有时候/有时 describe occasional, not frequent, events: 有时 (sometimes) sits at the opposite end from 总是 (always).
