What are negation words (否定词) 不/没/别?

Chinese negates with three core words: 不 (bù), 没 (méi), and 别 (bié). Each has a distinct job: 不 negates the subject's will, a habit, or a present/future state; 没 negates the objective fact that something did not happen or was not completed; 别 expresses a prohibition or warning — "don't".

English has a single "not", but Chinese splits negation by meaning. Choosing the right word is one of the most tested points in HSK 1–3 writing and speaking.

Placement: 不 and 没 go directly before the verb or adjective they negate (我不去, 我没去), and 别 also goes before the verb (别走). None of them appears at the end of the sentence.

不 — subjective negation (will, habit, future)

不 negates willingness, intention, or a general state. 我不去 (I won't go / I'm not going), 我不喜欢 (I don't like), 我不是学生 (I am not a student), 他不知道 (he doesn't know).

For habits and general truths: 我不抽烟 (I don't smoke), 她不喝咖啡 (she doesn't drink coffee), 猫不吃鱼 (cats don't eat fish — a general statement).

For present and future: 我现在不饿 (I'm not hungry now), 明天我不来 (I won't come tomorrow). 不 covers present and future states and intentions, but not a completed past event.

With adjectives, 不 negates a quality or state: 不贵 (not expensive), 不难 (not difficult), 不冷 (not cold), 不好 (not good).

没 — objective negation (did not happen / not completed)

没 (or 没有) negates the fact that an action happened or was completed. 我没去 (I didn't go), 我没吃饭 (I haven't eaten), 昨天我没上班 (yesterday I didn't go to work).

没有 negates existence or possession: 我没有钱 (I don't have money), 没有时间 (no time), 房间里没有人 (there is no one in the room). Here 有 is the verb being negated.

When negating a completed action, drop 了. 我吃了饭 (I ate) → 我没吃饭 (I didn't eat), never 我没吃了饭. The 没 already marks non-completion, so 了 is removed.

没 is for events that did not occur or things not yet realized; it does not negate a current state the way 不 does.

别 — prohibition and warning (don't)

别 expresses a negative imperative — telling someone not to do something. 别走 (don't leave), 别说话 (don't talk), 别担心 (don't worry), 别迟到 (don't be late).

不要 is a more formal equivalent, and 不用 means "needn't": 别走 = 不要走 (don't go), 不用来了 (no need to come). 别 is the most colloquial.

别 can soften a warning into a polite phrase: 别客气 (don't stand on ceremony / you're welcome), 别着急 (don't worry, take it easy).

别 with adjectives warns against a state: 别紧张 (don't be nervous), 别难过 (don't be sad), 别生气 (don't be angry).

不 vs 没 — the key distinction

不 is subjective/volitional: the subject chooses, describes a habit, or a present/future state. 没 is objective/factual: something did not happen or was not completed.

Compare 不去 (won't go / doesn't go — intention or habit) with 没去 (didn't go — a past fact). 我明天不去 (I won't go tomorrow — intention) vs 我昨天没去 (I didn't go yesterday — fact).

With modals, the modal itself takes 不: 不想去 (don't want to go), 不会去 (won't go), 不能去 (can't go). 没 does not negate 想/会 in this way.

Time clue: if the sentence is about a past event that did not occur, use 没; if about a present state, habit, or future intention, use 不.

没 vs 别, double negation, and 不 in possible complements

没 reports a fact; 别 gives a command. 他没来 (he didn't come — fact) vs 别来 (don't come — command). Do not confuse reporting with ordering.

Double negation (双重否定) emphasizes a positive. 不得不 (have to / cannot but): 我不得不去 (I have to go). 不是不 (it's not that... not...): 我不是不想帮你,是没有时间 (it's not that I don't want to help, it's that I have no time). 不能不去 (cannot not go = must go).

In a possible complement, 不 sits in the middle between the verb and the result to negate ability: 听不懂 (can't understand), 找不到 (can't find), 吃不下 (can't eat). This is different from 没听懂 (didn't understand — a past result).

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not use 没 with 了 in the same verb phrase: 我没去了 is wrong → 我没去. 没 already marks non-completion, so 了 is dropped.

Do not confuse 不 (intention/state) with 没 (past fact): 我明天不去 (future) vs 我昨天没去 (past).

Do not use 没 to negate a habit. 我不抽烟 (I don't smoke — habit), not 我没抽烟 (which would mean a specific past occasion). 没 negates a specific event; 不 negates a habit.

别 is only for commands and warnings, not for reporting facts: 别来 (command) vs 他没来 (fact). Never write 别没来.

For possible complements keep 不 in the middle (听不懂, 找不到), not 没 — 没听懂 means "didn't understand" (a result) with a different meaning.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the difference between 不 and 没?

不 negates subjective will, habits, and present/future states (不去, 不喜欢, 我不是学生), while 没 negates objective past facts or uncompleted actions (没去, 没吃饭, 没有钱). Use 没 for "didn't happen" and 不 for "doesn't/won't".

When do I drop 了 in a negative sentence?

With 没, drop 了 because 没 already marks non-completion: 我吃饭了 → 我没吃饭, not 我没吃饭了.

What does 别 mean and when do I use it?

别 expresses a prohibition or warning ("don't"): 别走, 别说话, 别担心. It is a command to someone, not a statement of fact, and 不要 is its more formal equivalent.

How do I express "have to" or a strong "must" with negation?

Use the double negative 不得不 (I have to): 我不得不去. Or 不是不 + clause for "it's not that... not..." — 我不是不想帮你,是没有时间.
