Why one Chinese character can mean many things

Chinese verbs do not change form, so a single character like 打, 开, or 上 can appear in dozens of everyday phrases with very different translations. This is called 一词多义 (yī cí duō yì, "one word, many meanings") or 兼类词 (jiānlèicí, "multi-class word").

The meaning depends almost entirely on the object or complement that follows. 打 alone means "hit", but 打电话 means "make a phone call" and 打篮球 means "play basketball". You cannot guess these from the base meaning — you must learn them as whole collocations (搭配 dāpèi).

打 (dǎ) — from "hit" to phone calls, ball games, and taxis

The core meaning of 打 is "to hit or strike": 打人 (hit someone), 打破 (break by hitting). But it stretches far beyond that once an object is attached.

打电话 (dǎ diànhuà) — make a phone call. 打篮球 (dǎ lánqiú) — play basketball; 打羽毛球 — play badminton; 打乒乓球 — play ping-pong. Ball games and racket sports use 打 for "play".

打车 (dǎchē) — take a taxi; 打的 (dǎdī) — hail a cab. 打开 (dǎkāi) — open (打 plus the result complement 开). 打算 (dǎsuàn) — plan to; 打扫 (dǎsǎo) — clean up; 打招呼 (dǎ zhāohu) — greet.

开 (kāi) — from "open" to driving and meetings

The core meaning of 开 is "to open": 开门 (open the door), 开窗户 (open the window). As with 打, the object reshapes the meaning.

开车 (kāichē) — drive a car; 开会 (kāihuì) — hold or attend a meeting; 开始 (kāishǐ) — begin; 开心 (kāixīn) — happy; 开玩笑 (kāi wánxiào) — joke, make a joke.

开水 (kāishuǐ) — boiled water (from 水开了, the water has come to a boil). 打开 and 开门 both mean "open", but 打开 is more general while 开门 is for doors.

上 (shàng) — from "up" to work, class, and the internet

The core meaning of 上 is "up" or "on top of": 上面 (on top), 上楼 (go upstairs), 在桌子上 (on the table). It also means "to go onto or into" a place or routine.

上班 (shàngbān) — go to work; 上课 (shàngkè) — attend class; 上网 (shàngwǎng) — go online, use the internet. 上车 (shàngchē) — get on a bus or car; 上飞机 (board a plane).

上 also marks time: 上个月 (last month), 上星期 (last week), and it appears in 早上 (morning) and 晚上 (evening). The same character points up toward an earlier or higher point in time.

How to learn polysemous words

Learn whole collocations, not single translations. Memorize 打电话 as one unit meaning "make a call", rather than 打 = "hit" and hoping it generalizes.

Notice the shared core idea. 打 points to an active strike or action, 开 to opening or starting, 上 to going up, onto, or into. That core helps you remember why 开会 means "hold a meeting" (you "open" one) and 上网 means "go online".

Group by scenario, not by character. Practice 打车, 开车, and 上车 together as a transport cluster; 上班, 上课, and 上网 as a daily-routine cluster.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not translate word-for-word. "Open a meeting" is not 开门会; the fixed phrase is 开会 (hold a meeting). English "make a phone call" uses no "hit", and Chinese 打电话 uses no "make".

Do not mix up 开门 and 开车. Both use 开, but 开门 means "open a door" and 开车 means "drive a car". The object decides the meaning.

Do not say 上网球 to mean "play tennis online". 上网 means "go online", while ball games use 打: 打网球 (play tennis).

Do not confuse the 上 collocations. 上班 is "go to work", 上课 is "attend class", and 上网 is "go online" — the same 上 with three different objects.

FAQ

Common questions

Why does 打 have so many different meanings?

Because Chinese verbs do not change form, one character like 打 combines with different objects to form distinct collocations: 打电话 (make a call), 打篮球 (play basketball), 打车 (take a taxi). Each collocation is its own unit to memorize.

What is the difference between 一词多义 and 兼类词?

一词多义 means one word with several related meanings (打 = hit, call, play). 兼类词 means one word that can serve as more than one part of speech, such as 上 as a verb (上车) and a noun or locative (上面). Learners can treat both as "learn the collocation".

How do I know whether a new word uses 打, 开, or 上?

You cannot always guess from logic, so learn the whole phrase. A few patterns help: ball games use 打, opening and starting use 开, and getting onto a vehicle or into a routine uses 上.

Is 打开 just 打 plus 开 combined?

Yes, 打开 is 打 (do an action) plus the result complement 开 (open), so together they mean "open". 开门 uses 开 directly with the object 门. Both are correct; the difference is structural, not a change in the basic meaning of 开.
