What is a pronoun (代词)?
A pronoun (代词 dàicí) is a word that stands in for a noun — a person, thing, place, or amount — so you do not have to repeat the noun every time. Chinese personal pronouns (人称代词) include 我 (I), 你 (you), 他/她/它 (he/she/it), and their plurals 我们/你们/他们. Beyond these basics, a few pronouns deserve special attention: 咱们, 自己, 大家, 每, and 各.
These five are HSK 1–3 high-frequency and each carries a nuance that English does not mark in the same way. 咱们 means "we" but includes the listener; 自己 points back to a person ("-self"); 大家 means "everyone" as a group; 每 and 各 both mean "each/every" but distribute differently.
A useful rule of thumb: Chinese pronouns do not change form for case (subject vs object). 我 stays 我 whether it is "I" or "me". What changes is position and the small particles and classifiers that follow.
咱们 vs 我们 — inclusive vs exclusive "we"
我们 (wǒmen) is the general word for "we". It can be inclusive (speaker + listener) or exclusive (speaker + others, but NOT the listener). 咱们 (zánmen) is more specific: it is INCLUSIVE, always meaning "you and I (and possibly others)" — it includes the person you are speaking to.
咱们一起吃饭吧! — "let's eat together!" (definitely includes the listener). 咱们走吧 — "let's go (you and me)".
我们 can be ambiguous: 我们先走了,你慢慢来 — "we are leaving first, take your time" (excludes the listener). But 我们一起去吧 is also fine for inclusive use. So: 咱们 = always inclusive; 我们 = can be either, but often implies a group that may or may not include the listener.
Style note: 咱们 is more common in northern/Beijing Mandarin and in warm, friendly, inclusive invitations. In formal writing, 我们 is preferred. If you are unsure, 我们 is always safe.
自己 — "oneself" (reflexive and emphatic)
自己 (zìjǐ) means "oneself" and is used in two ways: as a reflexive (an action done to oneself) and as an emphatic "by myself / personally".
Reflexive: 照顾好自己 — "take care of yourself". 他认识自己 — "he knows himself". 我自己做的 — "I made it myself".
Emphatic with a personal pronoun: 我自己 (myself), 你自己 (yourself), 他自己 (himself), 大家自己 (everyone themselves). This stresses that the person did it personally, without help: 这件事我自己处理 — "I will handle this myself".
自己 can also be used alone to mean "oneself" generally: 靠自己 — "rely on oneself". 自己人 — "one of us / an insider". Note that 自己 is NOT a gender-marker like English "-self" changes (myself/himself/itself); it stays 自己 and the person comes before it.
大家 — "everyone" (the whole group)
大家 (dàjiā) means "everyone" or "everybody" — it refers to all the people present or all the people in a group, treating them as a single collective.
大家好! — "hello everyone!" (the standard opening of a speech or class). 谢谢大家 — "thank you all". 大家都很忙 — "everyone is busy".
大家 is often the subject of the sentence and works well with 都 to emphasize totality: 大家都来了 — "everyone has come".
Contrast with 每/各 (below): 大家 points at the whole group at once, while 每 and 各 break the group into individual members. Use 大家 for group greetings and group statements; use 每/各 when you mean "each one separately".
每 — "each/every" (distributed, one by one)
每 (měi) means "each" or "every" and distributes a statement over the members of a set, one at a time. It is usually followed by a measure word (classifier) plus a noun.
每个人 — "every person". 每天 — "every day". 每本书 — "every book". 每个星期 — "every week".
每 very often pairs with 都 to mean "all of them": 每个人都很开心 — "everyone is happy" (literally "each person is happy"). 我每天都跑步 — "I run every day".
Without a measure word, 每 + noun is limited: 每天, 每年, 每次 are fixed expressions where the measure word is understood or absent. Otherwise keep the measure word: 每个人 not 每人 (though 每人 also occurs in formal writing).
各 — "each (respective)" (distributed, separately)
各 (gè) also means "each" or "every", but it stresses that different members each have their own (different) thing — "each respective one". It is often translated as "respective" or "various".
各位 — "everyone (respectfully)" / "ladies and gentlemen" (各位来宾). 各国 — "each/various countries". 各人 — "each person (individually)". 各做各的 — "each does their own thing".
各 + 位/国/人 often appears without a measure word, and the noun is often one syllable (各国, 各地, 各种). 各种 means "all kinds of": 各种水果 — "all kinds of fruit".
The key difference from 每: 每 + 都 means "each one, and all of them together" (uniform), while 各 means "each separately, in their own way" (differentiated). 我们每个人带一本书 — "each of us brings a book (same idea for all)" vs 我们各带一本书 — "we each bring our own (different) book".
每 vs 各 — how to choose
每 emphasizes the DISTRIBUTED, one-by-one totality — every member, often with 都. It describes a uniform, repeated, or regular pattern: 每天 (every day), 每次 (every time), 每个人 (every person).
各 emphasizes the RESPECTIVE, individual, differentiated side — each one doing its own thing. It often describes variety or separate responsibility: 各种 (all kinds of), 各地 (various places), 各位 (each of you, respectfully).
Practical test: if you can add 都 and the meaning is "all of them uniformly", use 每 (每个人都来了 — everyone came). If the meaning is "each in their own way / different ones", use 各 (各有各的想法 — each has their own opinion).
Also note 各 rarely takes 都, while 每 very often does. 各 also does not usually take a measure word (各国, 各地), while 每 usually needs one (每个人, 每本书).
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not drop the measure word after 每 except in fixed expressions. 每人 is acceptable in formal writing but 每个人 is the natural spoken form; 每书 is wrong — say 每本书.
Do not confuse 咱们 and 我们 when you need to be precise about inclusion. If you invite someone, 咱们 clearly includes them; 我们 might exclude them. In formal contexts or when the listener is not part of the group, use 我们.
Do not forget 自己 comes AFTER the person it refers to: 我自己 not 自己我. And 自己 never changes for gender — there is no separate "himself" word; just 他自己.
Do not overuse 大家 where you mean "each one". 大家 is the group as a whole; 每个人/各人 is the individuals. 大家都很高兴 is fine, but for "each person has their own task" use 各人 or 每个人.
Do not mix up 每 and 各. 每 + 都 = uniform "all", 各 = "respective/various". 每天 (every day, regular) is very different from 各地 (various places, different).

FAQ
Common questions
What is the difference between 咱们 and 我们?
咱们 (zánmen) is inclusive — it always includes the listener ("you and I"). 我们 (wǒmen) is the general "we" and may or may not include the listener. Use 咱们 for warm inclusive invitations; use 我们 in formal writing or when the listener is not part of the group.
How do I say "myself" in Chinese?
Use 自己 (zìjǐ) after the person: 我自己 (myself), 你自己 (yourself), 他自己 (himself). 自己 does not change for gender or person — it stays 自己, and the person word goes before it.
What is the difference between 每 and 各?
每 (měi) means "each/every" in a uniform, distributed sense and usually takes a measure word + 都 (每个人, 每天). 各 (gè) means "each respective/various" and stresses difference (各国, 各地, 各位). 每个人都来了 = everyone came (together); 各人 = each individually.
When should I use 大家?
大家 (dàjiā) means "everyone" as a whole group. Use it for group greetings (大家好 — hello everyone) and group statements (大家都来了 — everyone has come). For "each one separately", use 每个人 or 各人 instead.
