What is reduplication (重叠) in Chinese?
Reduplication (重叠 chóngdié) repeats a verb or adjective to soften the tone or intensify the meaning. For verbs, 看看 (look a bit) feels lighter and more casual than 看 (look). For adjectives, 高高兴兴 (very happy) is more vivid and emphatic than 高兴 (happy).
Chinese uses reduplication constantly in everyday speech, from HSK 1 onward: 看看 (take a look), 听听 (have a listen), 慢慢 (slowly), 高高兴兴 (happily). It is one of the most natural ways to sound more native.
The basic patterns are AA (看看, 高高), ABAB (休息休息, 研究研究), and AABB (高高兴兴, 干干净净). Which pattern to use depends on whether the word is a verb or an adjective and how many syllables it has.
Verb reduplication — AA and ABAB for a brief, casual action
Single-syllable verbs reduplicate as AA: 看看 (take a look), 说说 (have a say), 试试 (give it a try), 听听 (listen a bit), 想想 (think it over), 走走 (take a walk).
Two-syllable verbs reduplicate as ABAB: 休息休息 (rest a bit), 研究研究 (look into it), 商量商量 (discuss it), 介绍介绍 (introduce a bit), 准备准备 (get ready).
The meaning is "do something a little" or "have a try" — brief, casual, and friendly. 看看书 (read a little) is softer than 看书; 你试试 (give it a try) invites action gently. Reduplication of a verb never means "do it repeatedly" the way it might in English.
Adjective reduplication — AA and AABB for intensification
Single-syllable adjectives reduplicate as AA, often with 的: 高高 (very tall), 红红 (bright red), 慢慢 (slowly), 好好 (properly), 早早 (very early). They often work as adverbs: 慢慢走 (walk slowly), 好好学 (study properly), 早早起床 (get up early).
Two-syllable adjectives reduplicate as AABB: 高高兴兴 (very happy), 干干净净 (spotless), 漂漂亮亮 (very pretty), 舒舒服服 (very comfortable), 马马虎虎 (careless, so-so).
Reduplication makes the adjective stronger and more vivid. 干干净净 means "spotlessly clean", a step above plain 干净 (clean). 高高兴兴 means "cheerfully", livelier than 高兴 (happy).
Note: AA adjectives attach 的 when they describe a noun (红红的脸 a red face), but as adverbs they often drop it (慢慢走 walk slowly).
Reduplication vs 一下 and 一次
看看 and 看一下 are close in meaning — both mean "take a look" — but differ in tone. 看看 is softer and more casual; 看一下 is a touch more concrete about the single action. In everyday speech they are often interchangeable.
一次 counts a single occurrence: 看一次 means "look once", emphasizing the number. 看看 has no counting meaning at all — it only softens the action. Do not confuse 一次 (once) with reduplication.
一下 softens an action much like reduplication: 休息一下 (rest a bit) ≈ 休息休息. Reduplication is slightly more colloquial and friendly, while 一下 is neutral and very common.
ABAB vs AABB — verbs vs adjectives
The choice between ABAB and AABB depends on word class. Verbs reduplicate as ABAB: 休息休息 (rest), 研究研究 (study/look into), 商量商量 (discuss). Adjectives reduplicate as AABB: 高高兴兴 (happy), 干干净净 (clean), 舒舒服服 (comfortable).
A quick test: if the word names an action you can "do", it is a verb and takes ABAB. If it names a quality or state, it is an adjective and takes AABB.
This is a very common HSK 3–4 pitfall: 休息休息 (correct) vs 休休息息 (wrong), 高高兴兴 (correct) vs 高兴高兴 (wrong). Getting the pattern right is a fast way to sound more accurate.
Negation and questions with reduplication
Reduplicated verbs are negated with 没 or 别, never by adding 不 inside. 别看看 is wrong — the correct form is 别看 (do not look). Likewise 没看看 is wrong; use 没看 (did not look). The reduplication disappears when negated.
Do not negate a reduplicated verb by inserting 不: 别看看❌ → 别看✓. The negation replaces the reduplicated form with the plain verb.
Questions can use reduplication: 你看看行不行? (take a look, is it OK?). The reduplication keeps the gentle tone while the question form does its usual work.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not add 很 or 非常 before a reduplicated adjective. 很高高兴兴 is wrong — 高高兴兴 already means "very happy", so adding 很 is redundant. Say either 很高兴 or 高高兴兴, never both.
Do not use reduplicated verbs for ongoing actions. 正在看看 is wrong — reduplication describes a brief, casual action, not a continuous one. Use 正在看 for "is looking".
Do not confuse ABAB and AABB. 休息休息 (verb) is correct; 高高兴兴 (adjective) is correct. Never say 休休息息 or 高兴高兴.
Remember that reduplication softens verbs (看看) but intensifies adjectives (高高兴兴). The same 重叠 pattern does two opposite jobs depending on word class.

FAQ
Common questions
What is reduplication (重叠) in Chinese?
Repeating a verb or adjective to soften the tone (verbs: 看看 "take a look") or intensify the meaning (adjectives: 高高兴兴 "very happy"). Patterns are AA, ABAB for verbs, and AABB for adjectives.
How do I reduplicate a two-syllable verb?
Use the ABAB pattern: 休息休息 (rest a bit), 研究研究 (look into it), 商量商量 (discuss it). Two-syllable verbs never take the AABB form.
What is the difference between ABAB and AABB?
Verbs reduplicate as ABAB (休息休息 — rest), adjectives as AABB (高高兴兴 — happy). If the word names an action, use ABAB; if it names a quality, use AABB.
Can I say 很高高兴兴?
No. Reduplicated adjectives already express intensity, so 很/非常 are redundant and wrong. Use either 很高兴 or 高高兴兴, never both together.
