Why you need measure words beyond 个 and 杯
Beginners learn 个, 杯, 碗, 张, 本, 件, 条, and 只 first. But precise speech about objects, machines, vehicles, and ships needs more specific measure words. Saying 一个电脑 or 一个车 sounds unnatural; native speakers say 一台电脑 and 一辆车.
These advanced measure words group nouns by shape, function, or the way they are used. Learning them in small groups makes them easier to remember than memorizing one noun at a time.
把 for objects with a handle
把 (bǎ) counts things you hold or grip, usually with a handle. It also happens to mean "to hold" as a verb.
Common examples: 一把伞 (an umbrella), 一把刀 (a knife), 一把钥匙 (a key), 一把椅子 (a chair), 一把梳子 (a comb), 一把扇子 (a fan).
一把 also appears in set phrases like 一把年纪 (quite old) or 拉我一把 (give me a hand).
支 for long, thin, stick-like things
支 (zhī) counts long, thin objects: 一支笔 (a pen), 一支铅笔 (a pencil), 一支烟 (a cigarette), 一支箭 (an arrow), 一支枪 (a gun).
Do not confuse 支 with 只 (zhǐ), which counts small animals and one of a pair. 一支笔 is a pen, while 一只猫 is a cat.
For songs and poems, 首 (shǒu) is more common: 一首歌 (a song), 一首诗 (a poem). 一支歌 is understood but less frequent.
台 and 部 for machines and works
台 (tái) counts machines and electrical appliances: 一台电脑 (a computer), 一台电视 (a TV), 一台冰箱 (a fridge), 一台洗衣机 (a washing machine), 一台机器 (a machine).
部 (bù) counts works of art and some machines: 一部电影 (a movie), 一部电视剧 (a TV series), 一部小说 (a novel), 一部手机 (a cell phone).
Some items can take either: a phone is 一部手机 or 一台手机, though 部 is more common in formal or written Chinese.
辆 for vehicles with wheels
辆 (liàng) is the standard measure word for wheeled vehicles: 一辆车 (a car), 一辆自行车 (a bicycle), 一辆出租车 (a taxi), 一辆公共汽车 (a bus), 一辆摩托车 (a motorcycle), 一辆火车 (a train).
Use 辆 instead of 个 whenever you talk about getting around, renting, or buying a vehicle.
对 for a set of two that go together
对 (duì) counts things that form a natural pair or couple: 一对耳环 (a pair of earrings), 一对夫妻 (a married couple), 一对双胞胎 (twins), 一对鸽子 (a pair of doves), 一对眼睛 (a pair of eyes).
Note the difference from 双 (shuāng): 双 usually counts things you wear or use in pairs (一双鞋, 一双袜子), while 对 counts people, animals, and matching objects that come as a set of two.
架 for aircraft and 艘 for ships
架 (jià) counts aircraft and large framed objects: 一架飞机 (an airplane), 一架钢琴 (a piano), 一架桥 (a bridge, formal).
艘 (sōu) counts boats and ships: 一艘船 (a boat), 一艘轮船 (a steamship), 一艘军舰 (a warship), 一艘游艇 (a yacht).
These are useful in travel and news contexts: 一架飞机起飞了 (an airplane took off), 一艘船到港了 (a ship arrived at port).
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not use 个 as a catch-all: 一台电脑 and 一辆车 are correct, not 一个电脑 and 一个车.
Keep 支 and 只 separate: 一支笔 (a pen) uses 支, but 一只猫 (a cat) and 一只鞋 (one shoe) use 只.
Match the measure word to the object type: 把 for handled things, 台/部 for machines and works, 辆 for vehicles, 架 for aircraft, 艘 for ships.
For pairs, choose 对 (matching sets and couples) over 双 (wearable pairs): 一对耳环 but 一双鞋.
