Navigating the subway like a local

Chinese subways are efficient but the announcements and signs can be overwhelming. Learn to ask 去...坐几号线 — "which line to take to..." — followed by your destination. At the ticket machine, say 我要买一张票 if you need one ticket, or 两张 for two tickets.

Key subway phrases: 在哪里换乘 for transfers, 下一站是...吗 to confirm the next station, 我在...下车 for "I get off at...", and 出口在哪儿 to ask for the exit. Metro exits are numbered A/B/C/D; ask 哪个出口近 to find the closest exit to your destination.

Taking the bus without getting lost

For buses, first confirm the route: 这辆车去...吗 — "does this bus go to...". Ask 多少钱 for the fare (most city buses cost 1–2 RMB) and 可以用手机付吗 to check if mobile payment is accepted. Many buses now only accept WeChat/Alipay transit codes, not cash.

Say 到了叫我一下 to ask someone to alert you when your stop arrives. If unsure, show your destination on a map and ask 到这一站吗. Useful bus words: 前门 for front door (entry), 后门 for rear door (exit), 下一站 for next stop, and 终点站 for the final stop.

Train travel: tickets, seats, and station signs

Chinese train stations are large; arrive early. At the ticket counter say 我要买去...的票 to buy a ticket to your destination. Specify the train type: 高铁 for high-speed, 动车 for express, 普通火车 for regular train. Choose seat class: 二等座 for second class, 一等座 for first class, 商务座 for business class.

At the station, look for 进站口 for the entrance and 检票口 for the ticket gate. Your ticket shows 车次 for the train number, 车厢 for the carriage number, and 座位号 for your seat. If you miss your train, go to 改签窗口 to change your ticket. For refunds, find 退票窗口.

Handling delays, lost items, and common problems

If a train is delayed, ask 晚点多长时间 for how long. For a cancelled train, say 火车取消了 and ask 下一班是什么时候. If you left something on the train, report it at 失物招领处 — the lost and found counter — and say 我把...落在车上了.

When transferring between subway lines inside a station, follow the signs for 换乘. Most stations show both Chinese and pinyin. For long-distance buses, go to 长途汽车站 and ask 去...的大巴几点发车 for departure times. In smaller cities, 打车 might be more practical than bus for unfamiliar routes.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I buy a subway ticket if the machine is in Chinese?

Most machines have an English button in the top-right corner. If not, tap the destination station on the map, insert cash or scan your phone, and collect the token or card.

Can I use cash on Chinese buses?

In many cities, buses no longer accept cash. Download Alipay or WeChat and activate the transit QR code before your trip. Some cities have dedicated transit apps.

What is the difference between 高铁 and 动车?

高铁 (G-class) is the fastest, running 300+ km/h on dedicated high-speed lines. 动车 (D-class) is slightly slower at 200–250 km/h and may share tracks with regular trains. Both are comfortable and air-conditioned.
