What are continuative adverbs (持续副词)?

Continuative adverbs (持续副词 chíxù fùcí) describe an action or state that keeps going over time — how long something lasts, and whether it is still true. The core set is: 一直 (continuously), 始终 (from start to finish), 从来 (all along / ever), and 再也不/没 (never again).

Like other adverbs, they sit BEFORE the verb or adjective. They do not change the verb form — instead they carry the whole idea of continuity, just as English uses "keep", "always", "still", or "the whole time".

These are HSK 3 high-frequency words: 我一直在等你 (I have been waiting for you), 他始终坚持锻炼 (he keeps exercising all along), 从来没去过 (have never been), 再也不来了 (never coming again).

一直 — "continuously / all along" (一直)

一直 (yìzhí) means "continuously / the whole time / keep on": 我一直在等你 (I have been waiting for you the whole time), 他一直在学习 (he keeps studying), 雨一直下 (it keeps raining).

It marks an unbroken stretch of time up to the present — or into the future: 我会一直陪着你 (I will always be with you). It is the most common and most neutral continuative adverb.

一直 often pairs with 都 for emphasis: 我一直都很忙 (I have always been very busy), 他一直在北京 (he has been in Beijing all along). The 都 reinforces the continuity.

一直 vs 从来 — continuity vs experience (一直/从来)

一直 describes an unbroken, continuous state or action: 我一直在学习汉语 (I have been continuously studying Chinese). It answers "how long, without stopping?".

从来 (cónglái) means "all along / ever", and it is almost always used with a negative 不 or 没 to say something has never happened up to now: 从来没去过中国 (have never been to China), 从来不抽烟 (never smoke).

Contrast: 我一直在北京 (I have been in Beijing continuously) vs 我从来没去过北京 (I have never been to Beijing). 一直 asserts a positive continuous fact; 从来+不/没 asserts a negative that holds over the whole past.

始终 — "from beginning to end" (始终)

始终 (shǐzhōng) means "from start to finish / throughout / always": 他始终坚持锻炼 (he keeps exercising all along), 她始终如一 (she is always consistent).

It is more literary and formal than 一直. Where 一直 is everyday neutral, 始终 adds a slightly written, resolute tone — often about principles, attitudes, or a stance held the whole time.

Common patterns: 始终坚持 (always insist), 始终相信 (always believe), 始终保持 (always maintain). The fixed idiom 始终如一 means "consistent from beginning to end".

再也 不/没 — "never again" (再也不/没)

再也不 (zài yě bù) means "will never again (do something)": 我再也不来了 (I am never coming again), 我再也不迟到了 (I will never be late again). It is about the future.

再也没 (zài yě méi) means "never again (happened)": 我再也没见过他 (I never saw him again), 他再也没回来 (he never came back). It reports a past that never repeated.

The choice of 不 vs 没 follows the usual rule: 再也不 for future intent (with 不), 再也没 for past fact (with 没). Both need 也 — 再也不 is a fixed compound meaning "never again".

Negative forms — 一直不 vs 不一直

一直不 (yìzhí bù) negates the verb and keeps the continuity: 他一直不睡觉 (he keeps not sleeping), 我一直不明白 (I never did understand). This is the correct, common form.

不一直 (bù yìzhí) is much rarer and negates the adverb itself — "not continuously": 他不一直住在这里 (he does not live here continuously). It means there are gaps.

For "never again" do not use 一直不 — use 再也不/没: 我再也不喝酒了 (I will never drink again), not 我一直不喝酒了.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not confuse 一直 (positive continuous fact) with 从来 (negative, with 不/没): 我一直住在这里 (I have been living here) vs 我从来没住在这里 (I have never lived here).

Do not use 从来 without 不 or 没 for a plain positive statement: 从来我去过 ❌ — say 我去过 or 我以前去过. 从来 almost always hangs on a negative.

Do not say 一直不…了 for "never again": 再也不/没 is the fixed compound — 我再也不来了, 我再也没见过他.

Remember 始终 is written/formal and 一直 is everyday neutral; 始终如一 is a fixed idiom, not a free combination.

Keep the adverb before the verb: 我等你一直 is wrong — it must be 我一直在等你.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the difference between 一直 and 从来?

一直 states a positive continuous fact (我一直在北京 = I have been in Beijing continuously), while 从来 is almost always used with 不 or 没 to say something has never happened (从来没去过北京 = have never been to Beijing).

When should I use 始终 instead of 一直?

始终 means "from start to finish" and is more formal/literary, often about principles or attitudes (他始终坚持锻炼). 一直 is the everyday neutral word for "continuously" (雨一直下).

What is the difference between 再也不 and 再也没?

再也不 is for future intent (我再也不来了 = I am never coming again), while 再也没 reports a past that never repeated (我再也没见过他 = I never saw him again). The 不/没 choice follows the usual future-vs-past rule.

Why is 从来 always used with 不 or 没?

从来 means "all along / ever" and is essentially always paired with a negative to mean "never up to now" — 从来不抽烟, 从来没去过. For a positive statement use 一直 instead.
